The Centre for Public Law at ILS Law College, Pune is pleased to announce the 6th ILS National Alternate Judgment Writing Competition, 2018-19.
Students pursuing 5 Year and 3 Year Law courses and LL.M course are invited to participate in this competition.
About the Competition
The competition aims to inculcate the qualities of critical thinking and analysis and seeks to enable participants to rethink and analyze Judgments of the Supreme Court & High Court. It provides the contestants with an opportunity to re-imagine the reasoning underlying the judgment while sharpening their research and writing skills. The Competition will be held in two rounds comprising of written submissions and oral presentations. It is open to individual participants only.
For the first and the qualifying round, the contestant has to author an alternate judgment on the basis of the facts recorded in the actual judgment of the court. They may concur with or dissent from the conclusions of law expressed therein with specified reasons for such concurrence or dissent.
Contestants whose written submissions are selected will qualify to the second round involving an oral presentation where they will present their alternate judgment and its reasons and justifications before a panel of judges at ILS Law College, Pune.
This Year’s Judgment
The case for this year is National Federation of the Blind, Maharashtra v. High Court of Judicature of Bombay, 2018 SCC Online Bom 931.
The judgment arises from a Writ Petition filed before the Principal Bench of the Bombay High Court and a Public Interest Litigation filed before the Aurangabad Bench subsequently transferred to the Principal Bench. The petitions related to an advertisement issued by the administrative side of the Bombay High Court for recruitment to various posts and involved the question relating to the scope of applicability of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 to the administrative side of a High Court.
