Adoption: Better alternative for surrogacy?
Surrogacy has changed the definition of motherhood. It creates two classes of mothers, birth mothers and authorizing mothers, who are either related to the child that they have taken a surrogate for
The women who give birth to the children are surrogate mothers, because of incapability of the real parents to conceive. The surrogate mothers are the persons who have supported the infants in their wombs. They created them out of their flesh and blood for nine months while suffering a big number of problems These are the problems/risks related to pregnancy –
Including exhaustion, nausea, backaches, high blood pressure, indigestion, bloating, difficulty in sleeping, varicose veins, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, future infertility, anemia, and embolism
Placental abruption, cardiopulmonary arrest, molar pregnancy, cardiopulmonary arrest, permanent disability, and death. A pregnant woman is vulnerable to all the above-stated problems and risks during their pregnancy period of 9 months.
They suffer not just the pain of pregnancy for over the period of 9 months, but then suffer the psychological effects of having their babies taken apart from them.
There are a huge number of abandoned, abuse, neglect, orphaned children in India, no one bothers about the condition of these children in India. For every child conceived by a surrogate, one orphan loses his/her part of lifetime family love.
Here are the reasons that adopting a child is better than having a surrogate mother.
- One can offer a needy child with a loving home and family. Like teaching of family traditions and customs, the sharing of faith, and the making of memorable moments.
- Instead of spending money to give birth to a child by a surrogate. The couple can help a child heal from painful past experiences and grief, whether this comes from being abandoned, being abused, neglected, or orphaned. The couple can help the child start a new life and knows that there will be ups and downs with adoptive parenting. It helps a child to move on in life.
- We can provide for another child in all ways. The childless couple wants to share their home with a child and have the space for that child. They also have the time and the emotional space in their heart for a new family member.
The mindset of people, especially Indians is that their ‘own’ blood is best. The existence of caste system is the reason for inherent bias in us, we judge character by complexion and intelligence by accent.
As per a study by an international children’s charity in 2011, has found that 4 per cent of India’s child population of 2 crores are orphans. Most of these children have been abandoned by their parents. In fact, the charity estimates that only 0.3 percent of these orphans are children whose parents have actually died That’s a lot of abandoned orphans
It’s time to change our mentality for a good cause. Promote adoption!
