NAME, COLLEGE, YEAR OF STUDY

Sakshi Kanodia, Amity Law School, Amity University, Haryana, 3rd year

NAME OF THE FIRM, ADDRESS

OIL AND NATURAL GAS CORPORATION, Scope Minar, New Delhi

DURATION OF INTERNSHIP

1 month (Minimum Requirement)

HOW BIG WAS THE OFFICE AND TEAM STRENGTH

The office was big enough, well furnished and fully air conditioned, and comprised of a 14 storey build. The legal department was at 9th floor. It consisted of around 15 associates who were headed by their chief legal. Most of these associates were pass outs of the top national law universities. The corporation takes in around 25 – 30 interns every vacations, who used to sit and work in the law library or along with their allotted associate mentor.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE, INTERNSHIP CONTACT DETAILS

One has to apply on the email id provided on their website with the filled application from provided there and a recommendation letter from the college. If shortlisted, you will be informed. Follow up may be required. Else, you can also get in by way of some personal contacts or other sources.

OFFICE TIMINGS

The working days were Monday to Friday. The official timings were 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 1 hour lunch break was also provided. (1p.m. to 2p.m.). They were quite stern with their timings. A leave application has to be submitted in case of leave.

ACCOMODATION

I used to stay at my home. But there are many P.G.’s nearby and metro is also nearby. So, one would not face any such problem in accommodation or to commute.

FIRST IMPRESSION AND FIRST DAY FORMALITIES

The environment was very friendly and formal. People around are good but professional. You have to report to the H.R. On the first day not much work was given, it was basically all about an introductory session with everyone. First of all, we had to get our provisional entry pass from the control room at the 6th floor of the corporation by filling the respective form. I had a compulsory interaction with the Chief legal, who allotted me my mentor, Ms. Sapna Khitoliya. I was allotted my project topic, “CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY”, which was to be submitted and presented in the last week of the internship.

MAIN TASKS

The main tasks which were handed over to me were the preparation of case notes of various matters, mostly relating to Arbitration and Conciliation and Contract Act. I was also required to scrutinize various draft and other contracts of ONGC. From time to time, I was asked to do research and prepare a summary and present it to my mentor on various points of law. I was allotted the task of preparing agenda relating to various matters. Sometimes, the mentor gave me the case file of ONGC, upon reading of which I had to discuss it with my mentor.

It was not necessary that work would be allotted only by our mentors, we could be given work by any other mentor also, subject to the fact that we have completed the work allotted by our mentor and have no further work to do.

I also attended various OEC (Outside Expert Committee) meetings and prepared the minutes of the meetings. Attending these meetings and hearing their arguments and their points was a great exposure and the best practical knowledge one could get.

On the last day of the internship I gave the presentation on my topic, in front of the entire legal staff of the corporation, which was followed by a question and answer session. Believe me, this was the toughest part and lots of grilling takes place.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The atmosphere was extremely healthy, congenial and conducive which created zeal to work in every intern. The work culture did not tolerate any act of smartness or flamboyance and demanded utmost amount of decency and sincerity, etiquettes and especially clean language. There was not any kind of fooling around. There are chances that the internship gets extended a week or further, if you do not work appropriately (in rare cases). One has to ask to know about the work/assignment. Everyone was equally approachable. Mentors are very supportive; you get to learn a lot from them, they will even provide you with enough technical and behavioural know hows relating to the preparation of your transition from a student to a professional.

One gets to learn a lot of things. It will be a good opportunity to flourish yourself. Good work done was duly applauded and appreciated on spot. The work done in a wrong/inefficient manner was criticized with the expected changes being notified immediately.

BEST THINGS

Best thing was the friendly and helping nature of the mentors towards the interns. A chance to attend the OEC meetings, direct interaction with highly learned people. Opinions related to different things were always welcomed.

BAD THINGS

We had no access to Wi-fi, sometimes it became annoying as sometimes it acted as a hindrance in our research work.

WHAT DID YOU DO TO CHILL?

The intern area was separate. So we could avail our own opportunity and privacy to crack some jokes, talk about each other colleges and chit chat. We could also take small short breaks and relax and go the cafeteria on 7th floor. All the co interns taught me a lot. We all had a fun time together. Also, nearby there is V3S mall and the market, where we used to go and chill during our breaks.
