About National Conference on Law and Public Policy
The relationship between law and public policy has been described as a 'hand in glove' one by Harrington and Carter in their book on Administrative Law and Politics. Policies are oriented towards a desired goal/state on behalf of the government which might take form of a law. Law shares a dynamic relationship with public policy. It is a process and a continuous one at that. At times the interface is subtle and may take years to manifest. This may be true of laws committed to environmental protection where the transformation may not be immediately visible. Sometimes, on the other hand, changes may have to be forced. This may be true of laws made to eradicate societal prejudice.
Although public policy is an old doctrine in the common law as well as other legal systems, it is not clear how the emergence of welfare nation through policy can transform the law. The correlation between law and public policy has been interwoven and involves spheres of philosophy, humanity, social and economic justice. The study of Public Policy informs the state as to how it could respond to the new dynamic challenges that emerge in the society. As every legislation requires clear policy formulation, there is demand for professionals, law students, research scholars who will be equipped to design, implement and evaluate policies and programmes. The inspiration has been derived from our transformative constitution while addressing the challenges of our diverse society.
