Centre for Research in Criminal Justice Sciences (GCRCJS), GNLU will be organizing an Expert Lecture on “A Stride Towards Equality: Discussing the Legality and Limits of Abortion Laws in India” on 5th August 2023 (Saturday) from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM in a virtual mode.

The speaker will explore the challenges faced by women in navigating the complexities of abortion laws and engage in an informed and respectful dialogue on the complexities and challenges of abortion laws in India.

The event will feature the speaker who will share their expertise and perspectives on various aspects of abortion laws, including the legal framework, constitutional rights, medical ethics, and societal implications. The event also aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by marginalized communities, where access to safe and legal abortion services may be limited or non-existent. The speaker will explore the current legal landscape in India, discussing the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, 1971, and recent developments in the interpretation and application of abortion laws.

Ms Aishwarya Bhati, Additional Solicitor General of India and Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India.

About the Speaker

Ms Aishwarya Bhati is the youngest woman lawyer and the only one from Rajasthan to achieve the title of Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court of India in March 2019. Currently serving as the Additional Solicitor General of India since 2020, she has represented the Union Government in various cases, including those related to the constitutional validity of the Agnipath scheme and abortion rights. Her involvement played a crucial role in the landmark Supreme Court ruling that granted a permanent commission to Short Service Commissioned (SSC) women officers in the Indian Army.

Ms. Bhati was instrumental in assisting the Supreme Court in expanding the rules of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act in 2022 to allow unmarried women to terminate pregnancies. With a career marked by 13 years as Advocate-on-Record, former Additional Advocate General for U.P., and her dedication to various legal services committees, she has fought passionately for women's rights, children's rights, disability rights, sustainable environmental laws, and anti-tobacco litigation. Ms Bhati's contributions to Indian law have been widely recognized and celebrated.
