Interview: Dr. Komal Vig | Dean, Sharda School of Law

We recently got a chance to interview Dr. Komal Vig. Here’s the transcript of the Interview: Dr. Komal Vig, Dean of Sharda School of Law, Sharda University.

Legal Bites: With an LLD, LLM and an MBA degree in HR, how and when did you realize that getting into Academia was your true calling?

Dr. Komal Vig: I have always had an inclination towards deep and conceptual learning. This persuaded me to LL.M. with good academic credentials, I was fortunate to bag a seat at PhD at State University. While pursuing my LLD., I realized that besides being a keen learner, I have a good teacher in my personality. I started my teaching career as a visiting faculty and the research work and teaching assignments motivated me to look for a career in Academia. The appreciation from students and my senior colleagues was also encouraging.

Legal Bites: With an experience of about 15 years in teaching and research, how do you feel our education system, especially with regard to the legal field, has transformed over the years?

Dr. Komal Vig: Now, I have an experience of more than 18 years in teaching & research. The education system has completely transformed in the last two decades. Modern time calls for a dynamic education structure to compete in the global world. So, this is the case with legal education. Nowadays, a student-centric learning approach is adopted to develop problem-solving skills among students. The curriculums are amended according to the industry's needs. More emphasis is laid on participative and experiential learning.

Legal Bites: Ma’am, since you have pursued your Master's in Criminal Law, how would you describe our criminal justice system from the perspective of a researcher who has minutely observed the intricacies?

Dr. Komal Vig: Master in criminal law helped me to acquire in-depth knowledge about the criminal justice system, not only in India but globally. Where in LL.B., we learn what all laws are, as in codes, acts, rules, legislations, bylaws, etc., LL.M. focuses on Criminal Jurisprudence. The Master's course helps the learners to understand the theories, concepts and philosophies behind criminal law. As a researcher, I have observed that the criminal justice system of India has undergone drastic changes from punishing the offender to reformation and rehabilitation of transgressors and victim compensation.

Many new and innovative ideas of the inquisitorial system and witness protection are making a humble entry into our criminal justice system. Recent developments in bail justice jurisprudence, prison justice, free legal aid etc. have revolutionized our judicial jurisprudence, and this will further pave a path to give timely relief to the large masses and cheap justice to the common man.

Legal Bites: Ma’am, in your opinion, does an LL.M. contribute to upskilling the research and drafting skills of a candidate? If not, then what importance does a master’s degree hold for a law student?

Dr. Komal Vig: In my opinion, an LL.M. upskills the research and drafting proficiency of a candidate. As I mentioned earlier that LL.M. gives you an insight into the justice system of the country and worldwide. This can help you to expand your legal knowledge. One can learn the recent legal developments, and since the modern legal landscape is increasingly evolving, this in-depth learning can open more employment opportunities.

Research is an important component of every Master’s program. With detailed and analytical research abilities, a candidate can have extensive practice in the analysis of laws drafting legal documents and presenting the finding. So, with LL.M., one can gain not only specialized knowledge but also a new perspective on legal theory, which can certainly attract leading law firms throughout the world.

Legal Bites: Being a rigorous researcher yourself, would you please like to highlight the relevance of paper publishing for young law students?

Dr. Komal Vig: In the olden days, scoring a higher rank was the only criterion to adjudge the competence of a student. They were not interested in going beyond the academic syllabus. But in present times, research paper publication is an important component of the assessment of knowledge. Apart from ensuring a deep knowledge of a topic, a research publication assures the dedication and efforts of a student. There is great relevance to research in legal education. It helps the students to learn the concept more proficiently. Comparative research can acquaint them with global development in the legal arena and add to the employability and glory in the professional careers of the students.

Legal Bites: Ma’am what contributed the most while honing your research skills? How can law students who are aiming to become good researchers, use it for their benefit?

Dr. Komal Vig: Undoubtedly, original research is a laborious task, and doctrinal research is comparatively easy as it involves the analysis of readymade data. So, one has to focus on the abilities and techniques needed to conduct research. It is the fundamental key to academic success. There are many research skills which are part and parcel of the process, such as finding and assessing the information, critical thinking time management, project management, etc. High-quality research can only be obtained by mastering these research skills, which eventually come with practice and experience. I believe a good and well-planned start is a ladder to successful research outcomes. So, a structured approach should be adopted to craft an outline of the topic.

Supporting evidence should be included with the introduction of every theme and every point. Another important point that law students should keep in mind is to use reputable and authentic sources to collect data. After that, one should always do a critical analysis of every concept. This will hone your investigative and analytical ability, and one last point, research skills can’t be learnt overnight. So, focus on time management and don’t overlook the latest developments in your research area. Finally, compile your research with a neutral approach based on the facts and evidence.

Legal Bites: Ma’am what is the importance of attending seminars and conferences for a prospective candidate who is planning to get into Academics?

Dr. Komal Vig: Conferences and Seminars give a platform to all like-minded people from around the globe to generate new ideas, exchange knowledge and inspire researchers. As far as academics are concerned, these events give an opportunity to the young aspirants to hear from great and renewed intellects, ask questions and discuss about the new trends in their field. It also facilitates networking with leading experts and visionaries which further strengthens employability opportunities. These conferences also provide a blended-learning environment and expose the attendees to discover new production operations.

Legal Bites: Since you have also guided PhD scholars, what suggestions would you like to give to our future legal researchers and scholars?

Dr. Komal Vig: On the basis of my experience as a researcher and a guide, I would like to suggest to future legal researchers and scholars a few tips and techniques. First, make an honest determination for effective and purposeful research. Acquire knowledge by constantly reading and staying updated with the latest advancement. Get a basic understanding of your subject. Comprehend the philosophy, history and development of a topic to have holistic development. Note down the collected information and interpret it cross-check your information with multiple authentic sources. Finding accurate, relevant and authentic information is the key to successful research. Show each writing and analytical interpretation to your supervisor for an expert and neutral opinion, and most importantly, stay organized at all the stages and have patience.
