Maharaja Surajmal Institute was established in 1999 with the objective of promoting quality professional education among the youth through innovative and modern teaching methodologies. Head of Department: Department of Law at Maharaja Surajmal Institute

Dr. Vijay Pal Singh is the Head of the Department of Law at Maharaja Surajmal Institute, New Delhi, and serves as an Associate Professor. He is an experienced academician with expertise in legal education, research, and academic administration.

He has previously worked as Professor (Law) at IILM University, Gurugram, where he contributed to doctoral programme management, research governance, and Ph.D. supervision, including implementing UGC-compliant research policies. He also served for over seven years at Amity University, Haryana, as Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor, along with responsibilities as Examination Coordinator. His earlier teaching roles include Gitarattan International Business School and Jagannath University, Bahadurgarh.

Dr. Singh holds a Ph.D. in Law from Maharshi Dayanand University and has qualified UGC-NET. He has been honoured with the “Excellence in Research” award by NITI Aayog (2022). He is committed to promoting academic excellence, ethical research, and mentoring students for professional growth.

Law Courses

The Department of Law at Maharaja Surajmal Institute offers two five-year integrated programmes:

  • BA LL.B. (Hons.) – Integrates law with humanities and social sciences, promoting interdisciplinary learning. Intake: 60 students.
  • BBA LL.B. (Hons.) – Combines law with business and corporate studies, preparing students for the corporate legal sector. Intake: 60 students.

Both programmes are designed in line with contemporary global trends and focus on practical learning through moot courts, debates, and discussions, supported by a well-equipped library and e-resources.

Infrastructure

Computer Labs

Auditorium

A centrally air-conditioned auditorium with a seating capacity of around 500 persons is equipped with modern audio-visual systems and is used for seminars, conferences, and cultural activities.

Moot Court Achievement

The Department achieved a significant milestone when its Moot Court Team, comprising Ms. Sehajdeep Kaur, Ms. Vanshika Vashist, and Ms. Varnika Singh (researcher), won the National Moot Court Competition at KCC Institute, Greater Noida (April 2023). The team secured the Best Team Award with a cash prize of ₹75,000, while Ms. Sehajdeep Kaur was awarded Best Speaker (₹10,000). This marked the department’s first moot court victory.

Legal Aid Clinic Initiatives

The Department of Law inaugurated a Legal Aid Clinic on 24 November 2023, aimed at promoting legal awareness, access to justice, and practical exposure for students. The clinic functions as a platform for students to understand real-life legal issues and dispute resolution mechanisms.

Legal Awareness & Outreach Programmes

Under the Legal Aid Clinic, a Workshop on “Fundamental Rights and Duties” (11 October 2023) was conducted at a government school in Janakpuri. The programme focused on educating students about constitutional values through interactive sessions, skits, and discussions, thereby promoting legal literacy and civic awareness.

Committees

Based on the official committee document, the Department of Law at Maharaja Surajmal Institute has the following exclusive / core law-focused committees:

1. Moot Court Committee

This committee is responsible for organising moot court competitions, training students in advocacy skills, drafting, and courtroom procedures. It also facilitates participation in national and international moot court competitions.

2. Legal Aid Clinic Committee

The Legal Aid Committee focuses on promoting legal awareness, access to justice, and community outreach. It organises workshops, awareness drives, and provides practical exposure to students through real-life legal issues.
