“The More System We Secure, The More Secure We Are”

The modern world has handled every aspect of its working into the hands of the cyber world. Our lives have become so intricately woven into cyberspace that it has become a dangerous place than ever before. In the latest wake of the Facebook Data Scandal, we can see how life on the web isn’t safe anymore.

The dark alleys of the cyber world tend to reveal more and more perils. Hence, Cyber Law and its importance have become crucial more than ever. Ironically there hasn’t been a more appropriate time to think about a career in cyber law. Before we indulge in the career aspects of cyberlaw, we should know about what counts as cybercrime and what is the landscape on which cyber law operates.

Cyber Crime – The Root Problem

Cybercrimes can be defined as “Offences that are committed against individuals or groups of individuals with a criminal motive to intentionally harm the reputation of the victim or cause physical or mental harm, using modern telecommunication networks.”

It covers all criminal activities done using the medium of communication technology components, the internet, cyberspace and the world wide web (www) that can pose threat to an individual’s financial and social security or a nation’s security. Issues surrounding these types of crimes have become high-profile, particularly those surrounding hacking, copyright infringement, unwarranted mass surveillance, sextortion, child pornography, and child grooming.

Cybercrime highlights the centrality of networked computers in our lives, as well as the fragility of such seemingly solid facts as individual identity. Cyber Crime can be broadly categorized as below

  1. Cyber crimes against property are where the target of cybercrime is your property like your database, computer and typically hacking.
  2. The cyber crimes against a person are where the criminal activities are done using cyber as a methodology for targeting any particular individual, for example, cyber harassment, cyberbullying etc.
  3. The cyber crimes against nations are where the criminal activities are targeted at nations, for example, cyberwar and cyber terrorism.

Now that we have a vision of what falls under cybercrime, let us take a look at cyber law

Cyber Law

Cyber Law covers wide including freedom of expression, data protection, data security, digital transactions, electronic communication, access to and usage of the internet and online privacy. The most imperative things one should know about cyber law are:

  1. You can publish and share electronic format legally.
  2. Offers between the two parties can be shared electronically.
  3. No one recognizes the concept of digital signatures and forms of electronic authentication. Digital signatures are now legal and valid and can be used in any proceedings.

The rapid growth of information technology has led to a situation where the existing laws are challenged. It deals with computer hackers and people who introduce viruses to the computer. What one should understand is that cyber law and cybercrime has a much wider area to play.

Cyber Law prevents or reduces the damage from cyber-criminal activities by protecting information access, privacy, communications, intellectual property (IP) and freedom of speech related to the use of the Internet, worldwide web (www), email, computers, cell phones, software and hardware, such as data storage devices.

Cyber Law presents a fascinating career option for people after college. It has a wide and great scope in the corporate field. Students who are experts in cyber law are in great demand and are paid handsomely. It’s imperative to have appropriate orientation and liking for the subject because it looks glamorous, but it involves a lot of hard work.

Employability Aspects of Cyber Law

One of the most prominent career streams in Cyberlaw is that of a cyber Lawyer. Being a cyber lawyer, you can draw a salary of 10-20k at the initial phase itself and then how you grow will be dependent on what all value, you bring to the table as a cyber lawyer.

If you have a degree in cyberlaw, then apart from being a lawyer you can also get government jobs in various departments like:

  1. Advisors for the ministry of information and technology.
  2. Cyber consultant in IT firms, banks or police departments.
  3. The police department has its own cyber cells to handle cybercrimes. So cyber law experts are always required to prosecute the multitude of cases that come up.
  4. Advisors to web developers or cybersecurity companies.
  5. Research assistant in Security Auditors and Network Administrators in government firms and technology companies.
  6. Advisors to e-commerce companies and other tech-based companies. The demand for lawyers in tech companies is at the highest and growing at a stunning pace.
  7. Independent cyber Law Practice.

To make a career in Cyberlaw one needs to be armed with a degree in Law or at least should have completed their graduation in BBA and LLB. You need to understand the technology and how social media works.
