This internship Experience at SVS Attorneys, Jabalpur is provided by Surbhi Jhanwar and discusses her experience at SVS Attorneys, Jabalpur as a legal intern.

Name, college and year of study

Surbhi Jhanwar, Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur, 4th year

Name of the organization

SVS Attorneys, Jabalpur under the guidance of Mr. Siddharth R. Gupta.

Mode of Internship

Online

Duration

18th July to10th September (45+10 days)

The 45 days internship was preceded by a mandatory Mentorship & Training period of 10 days. The purpose of the mandatory Mentorship & Training period is to evaluate whether the intern is fit for the internship or not and also to allow the intern to understand the work culture and expectations of the Firm.

At the end of the assessment period, if the intern is unable to meet the expectations of the firm, he/she is informed accordingly and given an opportunity to apply at a later stage when he/she has gained the required skill set.

Application Process

I applied for the internship via mail by sending my CV along with the Cover Letter at srg@svsattorneys.com followed by a telephonic conversation with Mr. Siddharth R. Gupta (Managing Partner of the firm). Thereafter I received ‘Riders & Disclaimers’ explaining the basic conditions, duties of interns & work environment. After my acceptance of the same, the date of joining was provided.

First day formalities and initial impressions

On my first day of the assessment period, I was given the task of drafting a Writ Petition. I was asked to work with my Co-interns who explained to me the case and the task assigned. After the completion of the work, we interacted with Mr. Siddharth R. Gupta over a phone call, who then evaluated the work and guided us through our mistakes. All the work is personally monitored by Sir.

Type of Works Assigned

  1. Drafting of legal documents such as Writ Petitions, Applications, SLPs, List of Citations and Judgements, etc.
  2. Extensive Legal Research
  3. Preparing Case notes, briefs, and summaries of new/fresh cases.
  4. Attending Client meetings
  5. Attending Virtual Court Proceedings at Madhya Pradesh High Court and its various Benched, Delhi High Court, and Supreme Court.
  6. Writing news articles about firm’s ongoing cases
  7. Exchanging emails with clients and other personalities in the legal field.
  8. Translation of various legal documents from Hindi to English.

Positive experiences

The positives of the internship are that an intern is never left without any work. There is a continuous flow of work and thus more opportunities to learn. An intern is treated at par with professionals and thus are vested with equivalent responsibility which helps them in improvising upon their skills and makes them work more carefully.

After completion of this internship, it became my habit to pay attention to every minute detail while drafting and formatting. It gave me the opportunity of having first-hand exposure to the cases and dealing with the clients.

Furthermore, working with the co-intern helps you in building up team spirit and learning better. This internship gave me a chance to work with various interns coming from different colleges across India which also helped me in building connections.

Negative experiences

The bad thing about this internship is that there is no leave (not even on Sundays). Also, since it was an online internship, you have to regularly check text and emails to keep yourself updated about the work being assigned to you.

But in the end, the negative sides don’t matter in front of all that I have learned from this internship. Also, had it been an offline internship, I feel that the learning opportunity would have been much better which I couldn’t do due to Covid-19.

Stipend

Based on the overall performance.

At the end of my internship, I received Rs. 11,000 as a stipend.
