Answer

The National Social Security Board for Unorganised Workers was constituted under the Unorganised Workers Social Security Act, 2008. The composition of the board is as follows:

Chairperson: The Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, is the Chairperson of the board.

Members: The board consists of the following members:

a. Secretaries of various Ministries and Departments of the Central Government dealing with the welfare of unorganised workers.

b. Representatives from State Governments.

c. Three representatives of unorganised workers, out of whom at least one shall be a woman.

d. Three experts in the field of unorganised workers’ welfare, out of whom at least one shall be a woman.

The term of the members of the board is three years, and they can be reappointed for another term.

The main functions of the board are to:

  • Formulate and recommend social security schemes for unorganised workers
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of the schemes
  • Advise the central government on matters relating to the welfare of unorganised workers
  • Perform any other function as may be prescribed by the central government from time to time.

The board plays a crucial role in the implementation of the Unorganised Workers Social Security Act, 2008, and in ensuring social security for millions of unorganised workers in India.
