Students for the Promotion of International Law (SPIL), Government Law College, Mumbai are pleased to announce a two-part Webinar Series on “Understanding the International Law Question in the Enrica Lexie’s Arbitration between India and Italy” with Mr. Sudhir Verma scheduled for the 17th and 18th of October.

About the Webinar

MV Enrica Lexie is an Italian Aframax oil-tanker. Built in 2008, the Enrica Lexia was involved in the shooting of two Indian fisherman in the Laccadive Sea off the coast of Ambalapuzha in Kerala on February 5, 2012. The tanker was taken to the port of Kochi under escort by the Indian Coast Guard, and was allowed to leave 80 days later after the owners posted a surety bond. This initiated a long drawn legal saga between India and Italy.

The first part of the Webinar explains facts related to the killing of fishermen onboard St. Anthony’s vessel and various institutional arbitration options available under the International Law of the Sea, and

In the second part, a discussion on the case, interpretation of UNCLOS articles and Indian laws relevant to the case, and how the invocation of the concept of ‘incidental jurisdiction’ prejudiced India’s arguments in this case.
