About the Society

The Society of International Law and its Affairs (SAIL) is a student-driven Committee at SVKM’s Pravin Gandhi College of Law created with a vision to acquaint the youth and legal fraternity with various events and affairs of the international arena encompassing International Law, Current Affairs, International Relations and helping in the development of proficient skills amongst students. With this aim, SAIL is conducting a Lecture on ‘Arbitration as a mechanism for settlement of cross border disputes: Investment disputes of Non-State Actors v. State’ by Mr. Gary Born.

About the Lecture

SVKM’s Pravin Gandhi College of Law presents a Lecture on ‘Arbitration as a mechanism for settlement of cross border disputes: Investment disputes of Non-State Actors v. State’. In Mr. Born’s words, “Arbitration is more efficient, more expeditious, more expert, more even-handed and more enforceable.”

Arbitration is considered more even-handed, particularly in the international context, because instead of having a dispute resolved on one party’s home turf one can have a dispute resolved in an independent, neutral third country before an independent and impartial arbitral tribunal. The lecture focuses on Non-State Actors holding States liable in Investment Arbitration Disputes and how such disputes are resolved through Arbitration as the dispute resolution mechanism.

About the Lecturer

Mr. Gary Born is the chair of the International Arbitration Practice Group. Mr. Born is widely regarded as the world’s preeminent authority on international commercial arbitration and international litigation. He has been ranked for the past 20 years as one of the world’s leading international arbitration practitioners and the leading arbitration practitioner in London.

He has participated in more than 675 international arbitrations, including four of the largest ICC arbitrations and several of the most significant ad hoc arbitrations in recent history. Mr. Born is uniformly ranked by Euromoney, Chambers, Legal500 and Global Counsel as one of the leading practitioners in the field. He is one of only two lawyers in the world, and the only lawyer in London, to receive global “starred” status in Chambers rankings for international arbitration.

He is President of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) Court of Arbitration, a member of the International Advisory Board of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), a member of the Global Advisory Board of the New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC), a member of the International Arbitration Committee of the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB) and a member of the Jerusalem Arbitration Center’s Court of Arbitration.
