About ILI PhD Entrance Exam

The Indian Law Institute (ILI) PhD Entrance Exam is a national-level examination conducted by the Indian Law Institute, New Delhi, for admission to its prestigious PhD program in Law. Established in 1956, ILI is a premier legal research institute that aims to advance legal education and research in India. The PhD program is designed for candidates interested in contributing to the academic and professional development of the legal field through rigorous research.

LI provides a structured PhD admission process, including an entrance examination and interview, where candidates are evaluated on their research potential and knowledge of law. Eligibility

Qualification: LL.M. Degree with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade (in case of grading system).

Requirement: Must have qualified UGC NET in Category I/II/III.

Categories & Selection Process

Category I: JRF-qualified candidates

• Admission only through interview.
• As per UGC Ph.D. Regulations, 2022.

Category II: Non-JRF candidates (eligible for Ph.D. Admission)

Selection Weightage (Exam Pattern):

• 70% – NET score
• 30% – Interview

Category III: Non-JRF candidates (eligible for Ph.D. Admission)

Selection Weightage (Exam Pattern):

• 70% – NET score
• 30% – Interview

Validity of NET Score

For Category II & III, the NET score remains valid for one year for admission eligibility.

  Note: One supernumerary seat each for J & K residents & Foreign students.

Exam Pattern

The ILI PhD Entrance Test assesses the research aptitude, legal knowledge, and analytical skills of candidates. The test is divided into two parts:

1. Part I: Research Methodology (50 marks): Five Questions to be answered out of eight
2. Part II: Core Areas of Law (50 marks): Five Questions to be answered selecting at least one question out of each subject in not more than 150 words from subjects : (i)Jurisprudence, (ii)Constitutional Law, (iii) IPC &(iv)Commercial Laws (Contracts, Partnership & Sale Of Goods)

• For candidates who have not qualified UGC JRF, a written test of three hours duration is conducted in offline mode
• Candidate must secure: (I) 50% marks to qualify. (II) 45% marks for candidates from reserved categories.

Important Admission Instructions

If the result of the qualifying examination (LL.M.) is not declared till the date of admission, the candidate shall be admitted provisionally.

The candidate must submit an undertaking that:

• He/she is taking provisional admission at his/her own risk.
• He/she will submit the final qualifying exam result on or before 15.09.2025.

If the result is not submitted by 15.09.2025, for any reason whatsoever, the admission shall be automatically cancelled.
